Sansho the Bailiff (Sansho Dayu)

One of the great films, 'Sansho the Bailiff' is set in the harsh feudal world of 11th-century Japan and is based on an ancient legend. When a humane local governor is forced into exile by his political enemies, his son Zushio and daughter Anju fall into the clutches of the cruel bailiff, Sansho. Away from the benign influence of his true father, Zushio begins to adopt the cruel attitudes of the bailiff.
