Pavilion of Women

This romantic, historical epic, set in rural Southern China in 1938 is the love story of Madame Wu (Luo Yan), the Chinese wife of an aristocrat, and American missionary Doctor Andre (Willem Dafoe). Their attraction defies ancient Chinese tradition and Madame Wu becomes desperate to free herself of her sexual obligations to her husband by arranging a gift of a concubine. However, her son develops an obsessive attraction towards his 'second mother'. Based on the 1946 best-seller by Pearl S Buck.
