The Turandot Project

Documentarian Alan Miller takes a fascinating look at the mounting of a monumental, extremely costly production of the Puccini opera "Turandot" in collaboration with conductor Zubin Mehta and Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, in its intended setting: the Forbidden City of Beijing. Along with a look at the elaborate preparations and rehearsals for the lavish production, which used 300 Red Army soldiers as extras, this film also shows the differences between Puccini's imagined slice of Imperial Chinese life and the reality of modern-day Beijing. Available on DVD only.
