Ivan the Terrible, Part Two

A.k.a. 'The Boyars' Plot'. The continuation of this complex story, full of intrigue, high level political in-fighting, family resentment and suspicion, an assassination plot and murder in the cathedral following Ivan's changes to his methods of ruling in 1564. Two reels were filmed in colour. This was Eisenstein's first use of colour stock and it shows what a brilliant master of this medium he would have become had he not had a heart attack after receiving a major award for the success of Part One and the public censure he endured on Stalin's banning of Part Two.
