EM Forster

Edward Morgan Forster was born in London, on January 1st 1879. When still a young boy he inherited a large sum of money from an aunt, enabling him to become a writer. He also attended Cambridge University and then travelled extensively through Egypt, Germany and India doing war work for the Red Cross. It was during the First World War that he met a young Egyptian tram conductor whom he fell in love with and who became an inspiration for much of his later work. The young man would die just a few years later of tuberculosis and Forster's homosexuality was not made public during his lifetime. His creed in life, as mentioned in the epigraph of 'Howards End', the novel that made him famous, was 'only connect'. "I have only got down on to paper, really, three types of people: the person I think I am, the people who irritate me, and the people I'd like to be." - EM Forster
