Spencer Tracy won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Manuel, the Portuguese fisherman who teaches a millionaire's spoiled son human values in this adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's popular story. Tracy was initially reluctant to take on the part of Manuel, mainly because he had to sing in several scenes and get his hair curled. Lionel Barrymore would make just one more film ('You Can't Take It With You') before crippling arthritis saw him confined to a wheelchair. Also stars Mickey Rooney and Freddie Bartholemew as the spoilt Harvey.
