The first of many fruitful collaborations between John Ford and Henry Fonda was this pulsating adventure yarn set in the American colonial period. Gilbert and Lana Martin (Fonda and Claudette Colbert) are a young couple trying to lay down roots in New York's Mohawk Valley. Initially struggling to adapt to the hardships of frontier life, with the birth of their son and the success of their crops they finally look set to make a home and raise a family. However, a band of marauding Indians soon threaten their lives and livelihood. Presenting a charcteristically Fordian view of community, heroism and self-sacrifice and featuring pioneering use of the recently developed Technicolor process, the film, which ranks amongst the director's finest, was nominated for three Academy Awards.
