Damien Parer died as he lived. Parer developed a passion for photography when he was given his first camera. By 1933 he had begun to shoot feature movies with notable filmmakers, the Chauvels. Suddenly the black cloud of war loomed. He became the first of 3 offical camera-men serving with A.I.F. in the Middle East. This was the beginning of an amazing but short career. "War," he told the world, "is just outside your door, I've seen the war, and I know what your sweethearts and husbands are going through." Parer was killed in action on Sunday September 17th 1944, while covering the landing of the marines on Pelelieu Island in Central Pacific. He died as he advanced shoulder to shoulder with the troops. Through his camera lens he has allowed us to remember.
