The Way We Laughed

A.k.a. "Cosi Ridevano". The epic story of two brothers who emigrate to the northern Italian city of Turin, to escape the poverty of their Sicilian hometown. Told over a period of six years, from 1958 to 1964, the story unfolds into a series of chapters (Arrivals, Betrayals, Money, Letters, and Blood), each representing one year in the brother's lives. The older, illiterate brother Giovanni (Enrico Lo Verso) has an extraordinary desire to see his beloved brother Pietro (Francesco Guiffrida) become a school teacher. He makes tremendous sacrifices to make money for Pietro's education, unaware that he's been skipping school and squandering his book money. When Giovanni's morals are compromised, and his obsession with making money transforms him into a ruthless labor boss, Pietro's loyalty to his brother is put to the test. In the deeply moving conclusion, Pietro, will make a sacrifice that will cost them both dearly.
