Fingersmith

This stunning BBC adaptation of Sarah Waters' ('Tipping the Velvet') novel tells the dark tale of an orphaned streetkid (Sally Hawkins), who is taken in by kindly Mrs Sucksby (Imelda Staunton) only to be drawn back into criminal activity by the unscrupulous Richard Rivers (Rupert Evans). Soon she is caught up in a twisted Victorian web of greed, deception and forbidden love. Beautifully made and highly acclaimed, this is a damning critique of 19th century sexual hypocrisy.
