During the early days of World War I, veterinarian Lieutenant Harry Colebourn purchased a small bear cub, naming her Winnie after his hometown of Winnipeg. After travelling with the soldiers to England, Winnie was placed in the care of London Zoo; Harry's regiment was shipped off to France and Winnie became the zoo's star attraction. When a man named A.A. Milne visited the zoo with his son, the story inspired him to create one of the most beloved characters in children's literature.
