Orphans of the Storm

DW Griffith's epic tale of two sisters caught up in the French Revolution, played by two sisters. Henriette (Lillian Gish) brings her blind sister (Dorotohy Gish) to Paris in the hopes of finding a cure for her, but they are separated and when Henriette is taken in by a kindly aristocrat she is accused of consorting and condemned to the guillotine. In classic Griffith's style this film is brimming with period detail, lavish sets, heroic deeds and sweeping statements about excess and tyranny; the film also references the contemporary Russian Revolution.
