Way Down East

D.W. Griffith's Victorian pastoral stars Lillian Gish as an eager though exploited young woman abandoned by her obsessive, cavalier husband when he learns she's pregnant, who finds temporary comfort and solace with a wealthy, passive, small-town lawyer. The film has two constructs, an evocative portrait of small-town Americana and a suspense melodrama about desire and attraction and despair that attains its climax in the famous ice floe sequence. With Richard Barthelmess, Lowell Sherman and Edgar Nelson.
