Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud ( Lift to the Scaffold )

Celebrated director Louis Malle's debut film was a post-modern film noir, starring Jeanne Moreau as a woman who plots with her young lover (Maurice Ronet) to kill her husband, making it look like suicide. Miles Davis improvised an excellent melancholy score that underlines the film's stoic fatalism. Moreau is at her finest in this understated thriller that foretold great things to come from its novice director.
