Faithful to the Heinrich von Kleist novella, this German-made drama from French filmmaker Eric Rohmer stars Edith Clever as the widowed German noblewoman who is raped in her sleep by an officer of the invading Russian army (Bruno Gantz). When she learns she is pregnant, the Marquise weds the count who, unknown to her, was in fact her assailant.
