Empire Falls
Based on Richard Russo's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this gripping HBO miniseries stars Ed Harris as the hard-working manager of a struggling diner in a financially troubled New England mill town. As people leave Empire Falls in droves, Harris finds himself inextricably bound to his home, not only by his relationships with down-and-out father Paul Newman, ex-wife Helen Hunt, brother Aidan Quinn, and cantankerous boss Joanne Woodward, but by a haunting memory of his late mother (played in flashback by Robin Wright Penn). Philip Seymour Hoffman also stars in this beautifully nuanced adaptation.
