Based on the infamous legend of the Bell Witch, a well-documented haunting, (after a night at the Bell residence future president Andrew Johnson remarked he would rather "fight the entire British army, than to deal with the Bell Witch."), and the only one known to have resulted in the death of a man. The story flashes back from present day and takes place in Tennessee from 1817 til 1820 when the violent hauntings terminated with the death of John Bell (Donald Sutherland). Taking an interpretive approach, the film chooses one of the many theories that have been put forward over the years. Sissy Spacek plays Bell's beleaguered wife and Rachel Hurd-Wood is the teenage girl around whom the vicious attacks are centred.
