A Scanner Darkly

Director Richard Linklater returns to the animation style of his earlier 'Waking Life' for this adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel. In the not-too-distant future, Keanu Reeves is a narcotics agent who goes undercover, spying on his friends, though ultimately becoming addicted to the mysterious substance D himself, and losing his grip on reality. Playing up the stoner laughs are Woody Harrelson, Robert Downey Jr and Rory Cochrane and also under investigation, the lovely Donna (Winona Ryder). Quite faithful to Dick's novel, this thought-provoking head-bender is also a cautionary tale of cock-eyed political power and paranoia.
