Ballad of a Soldier

Aloysha is a frightened young soldier fighting the Germans when, more by good luck than good management, he disables two enemy tanks. As a reward he is given a six-day pass home to see his mother. En route he meets Shura, and they strike up a friendship in this beautifully apolitical and touching war film that won Best Foreign Film at the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes, and was nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar, all at the height of the Cold War.
