Twenty-Four Eyes

A beautifully made, sensitive drama about a teacher (Hideko Takamine) beginning her long career. As the years pass we follow not only her progress, but the progress of 12 of her pupils, from the late 1920s, through the Second World War. Despite being a city girl teaching in a country school, she eventually wins over the locals and tries to imbue her students with a positive world view, even though she knows many are likely to die in the war. Winner of the Best Foreign Film Golden Globe in 1955, it is based on a novel by Sakae Tsuboi. In 1999 Japanese critics named it one of the ten best Japanese films of all time.
