Early Summer

Setsuko Hara has been promised an arranged marriage in post-war Japan, but too much in the world has changed for her not to challenge this tradition. In his usual sparse style Japanese film icon Yasujiro Ozu explores the effects of this radical thinking with humour and sensitivity, at home with one of his favoured themes, the clash of Old World meeting New.
