The devastating true story of the 1990 Aramoana massacre is told with great care by director Robert Sarkies, based on the book 'Aramoana: 22 Hours of Terror' by Bill O'Brien. Actor Karl Urban came home to play local cop, Nick Harvey, but noone is the star here, with a largely unknown ensemble bringing a believable immediacy to an event that shattered the notion of New Zealand's small-town, pastoral idyll. Though many community members were reluctant to give the film their blessing, and much of the filming was done at nearby Long Beach, Sarkies went to great lengths to quell fears that his film would somehow glamourize or exploit the tragic and bewildering murders of thirteen ordinary New Zealanders.
