Akeelah and the Bee

Award-winning family drama about a young girl who beats the odds in order to enter the national spelling bee, under the patient tutelage of strict teacher Dr Larrabee (Laurence Fishburne). Her solo mother, Angela Basset, is self-concious abut her modest income, uncertain whether Akeelah can compete with kids from more privileged families, but Akeelah has a fighting spirit and a determination to compete that will see her through. Young Keke Palmer delivers an inspiring performance beyond her years in this heartfelt underdog film, that in spite of the cliches, is a satisfying, triumph-of-the-spirit drama.
