Ed Harris plays Ludwig van in this bio-pic that begins on his death-bed, then flashes back to a meeting with the fictitious character of Anna Holtz, a young wannabe composer who comes to Vienna and ends up as Beethoven's copyist, transcribing his messy scrawls into neat musical notations. He scoffs at Anna's wish to compose, but as their relationship develops he begins to appreciate her talent and she eventually becomes more of a collaborator, working with him on his famous, and at the time, radical Ninth Symphony. Agnieska Holland directs with obvious passion for her subject and Harris likewise imbues Beethoven with a pleasurably careless and charismatic swagger.
