Three iconic battles from the first World War are explored in this three-part series. The Battle of the Somme was one the bloodiest battles in human history; on the first day alone British casualties numbered over 57,000, with over 19,000 dead. Gallipoli was an eight month campaign that was a military disaster leaving 140,000 Allies dead, and more than 250,000 Turks. And the Battles of Messines/Passchendaele were launched near Ypres in June of 1917 where again New Zealand troops made a major contribution, this time in a meticulously planned operation that succeeded. Also includes the bonus documentary 'An Ordinary Hero - The Story of John Kilpatrick', one of Australia's greatest war heroes.
