Donald Sutherland is South African school teacher Ben du Toit, someone who has remained isolated from the racial violence in his country until his black gardener's son goes missing following an arrest. Ben agrees to look into the case and discovers the boy has been beaten to death by a cruel police captain (Jurgen Prochnow). He hires a lawyer (Marlon Brando) to prosecute the offender, and finds his actions alienate him from his white friends and neighbours. Based on the novel by Andre Brink the film also co-stars Susan Sarandon and garnered Brando a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 1990 Oscars.
