Off the Black

Nick Nolte gives an unforgettable performance in this moving, though unsentimental dramedy as an alcoholic umpire who forms an unlikely friendship with a troubled teen after the youth vandalizes his home. When he asks the boy to pose as his son at his 40-year high school reunion, he inadvertently sets in motion a series of events that helps them both make sense of their complicated lives. With Timothy Hutton, Sally Kirkland, and first-time director/writer James Ponsoldt also pops up as Robby.
