The Flight of the Red Balloon

Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien makes his first French-language feature with this homage to, and expansion of, the beloved 1956 short, 'The Red Balloon'. Here the balloon acts as a kind of observer to a little boy named Simon, who lives with his harried mother, Suzanne (Juliette Binoche), a voice actress in a puppet theatre, in a cramped Paris flat. Suzanne's hectic life leaves little room for Simon who spends most of his time with his Chinese babysitter in this sweetly delicate and handsomely-made, observational family drama.
