Cafe Lumiere

Inspired by the centenary of acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu's birth, Hou Hsiao-Hsien's luminous portrait of modern Japan chronicles the life of Yoko, a young freelance writer. Making her way through life by forming superficial relationships, Yoko (Yo Hitoto) keeps everyone at arm's length, in an attempt to alleviate her loneliness, she befriends the owner of a second-hand bookstore. In a true homage to Ozu, Hou Hsiao-hsien's 'Cafe Lumiere' is a contemplative study on everyday life.
