Rain of the Children

While still a film student in the late 1970s, Vincent Ward made a documentary called 'In Spring One Plants Alone' about an elderly Tuhoe woman called Puhi. Living with her in the remote Urewera ranges, Ward documented Puhi's difficult life as she struggled to look after her schizophrenic son. But the story seemed unfinished. Then in 2006, more than a quarter century after her death, Ward returned to Puhi's home to complete the history he started. Incorporating parts of his earlier film, interviews with people who knew Puhi's story, and breath-takingly beautiful recreations, Ward has crafted a hauntingly moving, and virtually unclassifiable film.
