American Teen

A sleeper hit at Sundance, this involving documentary follows the trials and tribulations of four teens at a Mid-Western American high school - the jock, the popular girl, the artsy girl and the geek - as they experience love, depression, drugs, getting in with the right crowd and of course, graduation. Filmmaker Nannette Burstein ('The Kid Stays in the Picture') followed her subjects for 10 months and developed a rapport that allows them to reveal the true and complex natures behind their stereotypes. A modern-day, cinema verite 'Breakfast Club', it captures the pressures of growing up - from peers, parents, and themselves - with extraordinary intimacy and a great deal of humour.
