Wajda's War Trilogy ( A Generation / Kanal / Ashes and Diamonds )

Master Polish director Andrzej Wajda received an Honorary Academy Award for five decades of work, beginning with these three films about the Polish resistance to Soviet and Nazi occupation. 'A Generation' (1955) sees a teen living in Warsaw desperate to free his homeland. 'Kanal' (1957) follows members of the Warsaw Uprising escaping into the hell of the city sewers as the Nazis approach. 'Ashes and Diamonds' (1958) is a brilliant film illustrating the conflict of idealism and instinct in the story of a young resistance fighter who assassinates the wrong man at the close of World War II.
