In this Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film, Russian emigres are invited to return home by Stalin following World War II. But when a doctor, his French born wife and their young son arrive from Paris, they're shocked to find most of their fellow returnees arrested and killed. The family are given a small apartment in Kiev, but living in a world of fear and suspicion leads the wife to plan an escape. Sandrine Bonnaire, Oleg Menchikov and Catherine Deneuve star in this dramatic tale from Regis Wargnier ("Indochine").
