A working class mother blinded by pride hatches unrealistic plans for her daughter's show business career when a famous director comes to town and starts casting for his movie. Anna Magnani stars as the star-struck mother who finds the reality of filmmaking differs wildly from her romantic ideal, in Luchino Visconti's honest reflection of movieland, filmed at Italy's famous Cinnecitta studios. A tragi-comic send-up of Italian cinema, and the movie biz in general; beautifully told, with excellent performances from Magnani, and her young co-star, Tina Apicella.
