Belying its whimsical title, this Victorian era thriller tells the story of an adulterous wife who hatches a cunning plan to kill her abusive husband using an undetectable poison. Based on a West End hit play written by Roland Pertwee (father of Jon, grandfather of Sean), Ealing Studios stalwart Robert Hamer ('Kind Hearts and Coronets', 'School for Scoundrels') captures perfectly life in Brighton in Victorian England; and an excellent cast includes Googie Withers as the murderous spouse, and Gordon Jackson as the young chemist who is besotted by her, agreeing to become her partner in crime.
