The Sky Crawlers
Winner of the Best Animation Film at the Japanese Academy Awards, this futuristic sci-fi-tinged drama is based on a popular five-part novel by best-selling author Mori Hiroshi. In a distant future where peace has been achieved, war is now for entertainment purposes only, staged by corporations who enlist the skills of eternal adolescents, known as 'Kildren'. These young fighter pilots take to the skies for elaborate dogfights, they are highly proficient, but have no memory of their own pasts. Director Mamoru Oshii ('Ghost in the Shell') has crafted a beautifully-animated, subtlely restrained mystery that slowly unravels.
