The Sicilian Girl

A gripping based-on-fact drama about 17-year-old Rita Atria, who back in 1991 came forward to denounce the mafia violence that had claimed the lives of her brother and father. Lifting the Cosa Nostra lid on her small Sicilian village is a sure death sentence, and Rita soon feels the cold isolation as she is disowned by all around her. Director Marco Amenta made an hour-long documentary about Rita and the case in 1997, based on the court records and Rita's extensive diaries; this fictionalises the story but Amenta's clear grasp on the actual events has permeated this gritty film with an inescapable sense of realism.
