Roman Polanski's life has been marked by tragedy. His mother was killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust and his fairy-tale love affair with his wife, actress Sharon Tate, ended when, eight months pregnant, she was murdered by the followers of Charles Manson in 1969. And after rebuilding his life in the 1970s he made a fateful mistake during a photo shoot with a 13 year-old. Subsequently convicted of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, Polanski pleaded guilty and served 42 days in jail before exiling himself from the United States forever. Now, this documentary explores how the case affected both the young girl and Polanski, while addressing larger, lasting questions about the media, our cultural obsession with celebrity and the U.S. legal system.
