Empties

Frustrated with the apathy of his unruly students, Joseph suddenly retires from his job as a school teacher. But as a man full of humour and playful energy, he is not content to spend the autumn of his life in relatively uneventful peace. Conceived as the final part in director Jan Sverak's trilogy of metaphorical works about maturation that began with "The Elementary School" (childhood) and continued with the mellow, Oscar-winning hit "Kolya" (middle age), "Empties" is an intelligent, emotionally engaging comedy about a man who refuses to accept that old age is empty of love, meaning and value. Zdenek Sverak ("Kolya") stars.
