Ballad of Narayama

In a small 19th-century Japanese village, residents who reach the age of 70 are banished to the top of Mt. Narayama to die so that they don't become a burden to their families and the other villagers. Resigned to her fate, a 69-year-old woman attempts to find a wife for her son before she has to leave her loved ones behind. Shohei Imamura's acclaimed drama stars Sumiko Sakamoto, Ken Ogata, Aki Takejo. Director Imamura has trenchantly probed the nature of inhumanity and survival in a small, everyman's village. Narayama Bushi Ko won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1983.
