Based on the novel by Shichiro Fukazawa, and recounting an ancient Japanese custom whereby, in times of hardship, the young inhabitants of a remote village escort those over the age of 70 to the top of Mount Narayama where they would either starve or die of exposure, hopefully with a dignified resignation - but not necessarily. Combining Kabuki theatre style with cinematic techniques the great Keisuke Kinoshita has crafted an enduringly beautiful film. Remade by Shohei Imamura in 1983.
