In the late 60s in London, the model Dorian Gray (Helmut Berger) meets an aspiring actress, Sybil Vane (Marie Liljedahl), and they fall in love. Meanwhile, his friend Basil Hallward (Richard Todd) finishes his painting of Dorian, who, fascinated by the picture, proposes to the Devil to exchange his soul for permanent youth and beauty. With the encouragement of his older gay patron, Henry Wootton (Herbert Lom), the character and behaviour of the former sweet Dorian changes and he becomes a corrupt and amoral man, driven by sex, and capable of destroying many lives. While his friends grow older, Dorian remains youthful, never aging, but his painting discloses his innermost ugliness, the result of his despicable social conduct.
