The High Chaparral, the name given to the best and biggest ranch in the Arizona Territory, is owned by the Cannon family during the 1870s. Aided by his brother Buck (Cameron Mitchell) and son Billy Blue (Mark Slade), the stubborn Big John (Leif Erickson) is determined to establish his cattle empire despite Indian hostility. After the death of Blue's mother, Big John unites his family with the powerful Montoya's, an aristocratic Mexican family, by marrying their daughter Victoria (whose brother Manolito now lives with them as well). After what started as a marriage of convenience, John, his new wife and family tackle the gritty and unforgiving life on the ranch fending off Indian tribes, murderous drifters, thieves and the ever present heat, sweat and dirt of the land.
