In the gritty, neighborhood of "God's Pocket," Mickey Scarpato's crazy stepson, Leon, is killed in a construction "accident," and Mickey quickly tries to bury the bad news with the body. But when a local columnist comes sniffing around for the truth, things go from bad to worse. Mickey finds himself stuck in a life-and-death struggle compounded by a body he can't bury, a wife he can't please, and a debt he can't pay. Hoffman in particular is heartbreakingly good. Hes very heavy and looks terrible we know in hindsight what he was going through. His Mickey is morose, out of his element, often stewed. But Hoffmans work is never blurry. Directed by John Slattery ( Mad Men TV Series) he expertly navigates Coen Brothers terrain by shifting from the mordant to the gruesome in a tale of a community of lowlifes living in a blue-collar quarter of Philadelphia circa 1980.
