Pelle The Conqueror

Winner of the Cannes Festival Palme d'Or and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Picture, Bille August's moving film features a remarkable performance by Max von Sydow as the Swedish father who takes his son Pelle to Denmark in search of a new life. In the harsh milieu of the Danish farm, Pelle is inspired by the dreams of those around him - Rud, a simple boy who dreams of working in the circus; Anna, a young peasant girl who dreams of a rich marriage; and Erik, an optimistic farm hand who dreams of the promised land. Realising that his father cannot help Pelle fulfil his dream, Pelle sets off for a life of adventure - to conquer the world.
