Winner of the 1997 Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards, this Dickensian drama is set in Rotterdam during the 1920s detailing the events that occur after the brutal murder of the town's hated bailiff. Arrested for the crime is the bailiff's son, a lawyer, who tells his tragic life story to a detective. A powerful father-son struggle based on the popular classic Dutch novel and starring Jan Decleir, Fedja Van Huet and Betty Schuurman.
