Thieves Like Us

Robert Altman brings Edward Anderson's classic novel (already filmed by Nicholas Ray in 1949 as They Live by Night) to the screen in this moving and thought-provoking crime story set against the backdrop of America's Depression Era. Along the way, Bowie begins a touching romance with Keechie (Shelley Duvall), a local farm girl who longs for him to abandon his life of crime. With the police and the press hot on their trail and closing in, however, it becomes clear that there is little hope of breaking the cycle of larceny and violence...
