The second of three adaptations of Robert E Sherwood's acclaimed play, this 1940 film was noticably dampened by the omnipotent Motion Picture Production Code and focuses on touching romance more than the tragedy of the play. In this version a ballerina (Leigh) falls in love with a dashing soldier (Taylor), but before they can marry he is shipped off to WWI. Distraught and now lacking a job she turns to prostitution, thus leading to a tragic demise. The original play started off with a street-walker (no sentimental motivation needed) getting involved with a client to the same unfortunate end.
