Director Alexander Sokurov's ("Mother and Son") audacious cinematic tour-de-force follows an unseen narrator who magically finds himself transported to 18th-century Russia. There, along with a French diplomat, he embarks on an era-hopping journey through 300 years of Russian history set against the backdrop of St. Petersburg's famed art museum, the Hermitage. As they pass through lush galleries and ballrooms, figures from Russian history - from Peter the Great to Czar Nicholas II - come to life before the time travellers' eyes. Filmed with a cast of thousands, three live orchestras and an army of technicians, "Russian Ark" was filmed in one continuous tracking shot, the single longest uninterrupted take in film history.
