Sounder
Set in rural Louisiana during the Depression, "Sounder" is the heartfelt story of a sharecropper family struggling to overcome adversity. After stealing to feed his family, Nathan (Paul Winfield) is sent to prison camp. Cicely Tyson and Kevin Hooks play the mother and eldest son, who hold the family together in their fight for survival. Considered groundbreaking in it's time, "Sounder" was nominated for four Academy Awards; Best Picture, Best Actor (Paul Winfield), Best Actress (Cicely Tyson) and Best Screenplay. Directed by Martin Ritt.
